SATRAPS OF CARIA. Maussolos, circa 377/6-353/2 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 15.17 g, 12 h), Halikarnassos. Laureate head of Apollo facing slightly to right, with drapery below. Rev. MAYΣΣΩΛΛO Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding long scepter in his left hand and double-axe over his right shoulder; between left leg and scepter, O. BMC 3-5 var. (differing letter on reverse). HN online 2120. Hurter, Pixodaros, pl. 33, 36 (this coin). SNG von Aulock 2359. A rare variety. Beautifully toned and struck in high relief. Good very fine.

From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, privately acquired from Leu on 21 May 1999 (with a photocopy of the original invoice enclosed) and previously from the 1978 Pixodaros Hoard.
